Marie’s Leadholder

Following on from Monteverde Grafica, here’s my other 5.6mm leadholder. I really don’t know why I bought it, but I picked it up for a couple of bucks in a Dollar Store.

The tip and jaws are metal, the body is plastic with an almost rubberised sort of feel to it. Round grip section and octagonal main body.
leadholder front section

There is a rotatable lead hardness indicator, with selections 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B.
lead hardness indicator ring

I note that the packaging also implies HB lead is available, even though there's no such option on the hardness indicator.
leadholder packaging

There is no lead sharpener under the top cap, which isn’t intended to come off.

The brand is Marie’s, and according to the packaging that would be Shanghai SIIC Marie Painting Materials Co. Ltd.

For the price, this actually seems a pretty good buy to me.

Clutch Pencil not leadholder. Dave don't give in to globilisation.

Marie's look like a Rotring300 on steriods and without the red bits. Quite a pleasing design. I'll have to start frequenting Dollar shops now.

What do you use to sharpen the lead ? A normal pencil sharpener.

Can't recall even seeing 8B writen anywhere let alone the actual leads.

Don't really want to get involved in the argument too much...

but in Kiwi Dave's defense this one says "Lead Holder" on the packet...

[couldn't it be claimed that mechanical pencils and clutch pencils are both leadholders, just different types?]

Lefty - 1.1, 1.15, 1.18, 1.2mm lead are all the same size, just different companies and retailers use different rounding conventions.

razide - K makes a good point :-)

Yea, well, I don't like to give into globalisation, but MP's and leadholders are part of the engineering domain and thus subject to the forces of standardisation...I've even ever so slowly and hesitantly changed to "drafting". Of course when I started this blog I called it DMP, not DPP [propelling pencils] :-)

can you give me an example of a company that sells any of those lead sizes? (1.1,1.15,1.18, or 1.2 lead)?
thanks

would it be possibe to fit a 1.3mm lead refill into a 1.1 mm pencil???i cant find any of those lead refill sizes from any company...
thanks

I doubt 1.3 would fir a 1.18mm pencil.
A simple Google search returns me thousands of hits for "1.18mm lead refill". Example pencil brands like Yard-O-Led and Tornado, retailers like Cult Pens.

You'd be better off asking them rather than me.

That was a pretty good deal. Less than half of what I paid for the same 5.6 mm lead holder set that was branded "Creative Mark" for Jerry's Artarama which sports the exact same design, color, and indicator markings. Makes for a sturdy and fun sketching tool.

Dave, you're wriggling like Richie McCaw pinged for offside play in a ruck. The US hasn't bowed to global standardisation they're still using MPH rather than KPH.

Anyway, how does the 8B write ? Is it twice as soft as a 4B or more so. That was why I was wondering about sharpening as I expect it would blunt pretty quickly.

2nd_astronaut said...

what is KPH? nearly as worse as MPH... it's km/h!

2nd_astronaut (still angry about the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter because of that english crap units) :-)

B2-kun - thanks for the info. Good to know it actually is a "sturdy and fun sketching tool" as suspected.

razide - Richie has never been offside, you must be viewing your TV screen from sort of weird angle which introduces the sort of parallax error, imprecision and inaccuracy that 2nd is railing against. But anyway, I do believe in "appropriate" standardisation and globalisation, and in some ways the US is clearly not playing the game and are being a bit naughty - without checking my facts (and writing after beer o'clock), I seem to recall Benjamin Franklin being a metric guy, and that the US has a daugther of the kilogram...but still they have pounds :-)

As for writing with 8B - no idea, haven't used it. Maybe B2-kun or someone will step in here? I have in the past sharpened some 5.6mm lead with an ordinary pencil sharpener, but it was a bit of a drama.

2nd_astronaut - correct, but hey, "we" (even the Americans) are British (not Germans) when it comes to precision :-)

8B as mech. pencil lead? I've tried 6B in my Gessner pencil (5.6mm too) it was nice, black and had to be sharpened just too often, I can't imagine what 8B must be like.
What's wrong with German precision, BTW?

Nothing wrong with German precision, its most admirable in many circumstances, but there are times when the Blackadder likes room to wriggle and slither ;-)

Right! Baldrick got it!

i took your advice and asked is Yard-o-led's lead refill was 1.18mm i was on the filofax US website and asked about the lead, and a Lamy rep responded...about Lamy's lead refills....does filofax own Lamy too???

Lefty

Kiwi-d said...

I think Lamy represent Filofax in USA. There are truckloads of retailers of 1.1, 1.15, 1.18, 1.2 lead in the USA.

Sorry Dave,
I apologise for the unfounded jibe at Mr McCaw's offside behaviour, the parallax error must have been induced by viewing from the other side of the Tasman.

I will name my black 0.7mm Pentel Graph 1000 "Richie" in his honour.

Kiwi-d said...

LOL - The other side of the Tasman...I'm sure Richie will provide years of good solid unbroken black lines :-)

I wonder if YOL will ever come out with the Sterling Mortlock? Now that would be a pencil to own :-)

what about Richie off field behaviour, bit off side there as well I believe!!!!
