Pencil Lights

My thanks to Julia and others who sent me this video link on using a pencil as an emergency light source. Actually, I seem to think I've seen this video or something like it before, but its good to see again.

Making an emergency light source from a pencil

Umm, kids don't try this without adult supervision. Actually, I'd just probably stick with "don't try this", irrespective of your age.

Aw, Dave, I was hoping you would perform your own experiment and report back to us! Just kidding, as I am definitely giving this one a pass myself. I don't like to play with fire -- I once lived in an apartment for three years and never used the stovetop burners or the oven because it was a gas model and you had to light the pilot light every time. I learned how to cook a lot of stuff in the microwave during that time of my life ...

It was a long time ago, but I have actually already done this. Back in high school science, part of an experiment into electrical resistance of various substances.
