New Home

A few folk wanted to see the collections new home, so here it is -

Down in the garage in a nice freestanding cupboard, about 1.8m high x 0.8m wide. There's also some spill over into the cupboard next to it.

I am still only part way through organising it within the cupboard, but basically items with their own packages or cases are stored in small boxes (like photocopy paper boxes or shoeboxes) by brand
The Lamys
and loose pencils are stored mostly in these plastic paper filing drawer sets. In side each drawer I have folded up paper inserts (acid free paper, archival grade glue, etc) to organise the contents. Again storing by brand.
One of several Pentel trays
Trays are double layered and can easily be taken out.
Basically I've still got to re-box things, but then it's pretty much done.

Dave, nice work...you must have a nice dry garage. If I tried that trick in my damp and dusty garage, I'd have no pencils left in two years.

Good idea with the folded paper inserts!
At the moment I also left the boxed pencils inside their boxes, but I am not completely happy with this. Maybe it's better to have all the pencils of each brand together? On the other hand some of the boxes are quite nice. I bought (unintentionally!) a few pencils models several times, because I forgot I already had one...

The big box in the first picture bottom right:
is that a "really useful box"?
I have the tiniest one of them in use for a bluetooth earphone and the audio-transmitter - need it for the wireless connection to the air traffic scanner as a plane spotter - picture follows.

2 1/2P - luckily the garage is reasonably free of those problems, although some other rooms...

2nd - it would be my preference to have all of one brand togther, just haven't some up with an efficent way to do it. If I took the boxed pencils out of their presentation boxes then I'd feel I was loosing something, even though not really in most cases :-)

Arne - that box is useful. It is A4 paper size so it is full of catalogues, etc. The lid is clipped on, and it is stackable. I have others the same. Unfortunately it is not a good fit in the cupboard because it is just a few mm too long to fit in end on, it has to go in sideways and so takes up much more room than it should.

Dave, question for you or other visitors here: should one take the manufacturers' stickers off the pencils, or not? On the one hand, they give the pencils the "fully untouched" look, and these stickers often have interesting aesthetic value. BUT, will the glue damage the pencils' finish after some time? I am worried about shiny plastic pencils, as I don't think aluminum one will be impacted by this. Any comment, thoughts, experiences?

Xaltotun - thats a very good question. I personally tend to trust the manufacturers have used an adhesive that will not damage the pencil and thus leave them on so there is no doubt about model number, etc. However, the manufacturers idea of 'damage' and the time frame may not really agree with a collectors idea...so who knows? The safest thing would be to remove them, but then you may value the sticker.

Hmmm. Do you remove them Dave?

Peel the lable off if possible then with the residue use a eraser to erase the residue.

Wonderful blog! If I ever worried about being a geek, I feel better now. (And that's a compliment.)

my second and last try to post a comment.
I find this verfication system disturbing: must there be a space between the crappy typos and the pictured number?
I'm sure, man gave up.

Nearly one year later another question:

Dave, could you tell us the name of the drawer boxes, I did not find them on the web.

TIA

Hi Arne
Yes the verification system now seems very difficult.
Anyway, the drawers are unbranded - just A4 paper sized from the local plastic item retailer - I see various different types in most local stationers, plastic box sellers, big discount stores, etc.
