It's Arrived

Well it was a long time coming, but it's finally arrived. The Rotring Rapid Pro 0.5mm mechanical pencil give away has closed, and the winner has been drawn.
Before I announce the winner I'd like to thank you all for entering, certainly a good number you did so, and of course to again thank Cult Pens for supplying the give away pencil.

Drum roll please....and the winner is....

Spuddybuddy, so please get in contact with me. Hit View Profile in the sidebar to get my email.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...

Over the course of this blog many people have very generously sent me pencils and things because they thought I might like them. I was rather surprised by the number of entrants and seeming show of enthusiasm for this give away, so I have decided to double it. Call it some form of a karma thing, or reciprocity, utu, paying it forward, whatever you like, but I'm going to dust off my credit card and toss in another Rapid Pro at my expense. So, we have a second draw, and the second winner is...

Rhonda Eudaly. So, Rhonda, lets hope you didn't stop reading at 'Spuddybuddy' above. Please get in touch to claim your prize.

(I have manipulated the publishing date on this post to make it appear next after the give away)

  2. I guess I'll just have to buy my own, but that's ok, this was a fun giveaway. Congrats to the winners!

  3. Congrats to the winners.

I continue the discussion here, because the old entry is closed (and I didn't want to discuss there during the lottery).

So, Arne has cited from rotring: "The 2.0 mm pencil offers an innovative push mechanism for controlled lead transportation that provides unlimited drawing precision and features a sharpener integrated in the push cap."

I am no leadholder man, so I lack some knowledge on their mechanisms... What is the usual one, and why is the mechanism of the Rotring rapid (and Staedtler 925 20?) innovative and different?

  4. Hi 2nd_(Aldrin?)

You can read about it on several sites but till now noone knows exaktly.
I think I have to get one in my hands to find that out, I presume.
Stay tuned (but may take some time)...

  5. Rotring Rapid Pro and Staedtler 925 25 in 2mm are mechanical pencils with the same normal push top ratchet lead advance mechanism as their thin lead brothers. They are not clutch pencils like most 2mm leadholders.
I guess thats what Rotring mean about innovative, etc. A bit of advertising puffery.

Well, at least thats how I remember it. I'm at work so can't check the archives :-)

  6. Thanks Arne and Dave... I only have one 2mm pencil (a Rotring 600 look-a-like from Tomato, Arne knows them :-/), which (at least to me) works like other push pencils. So I guess I have to find out about this clutch type mechanism... I guess this means these claws, which hold the lead (as can be seen here http://www.leadholder.com/assets/lh-draft/faber-castell/faber-castell-tk9400-sterling-silver-big.jpg)

  7. 2nd - try this page on Leadholder.
    http://www.leadholder.com/main-mechanisms.html
To use his terminology, most 2mm pencils have historically been 'pushbutton spring clutch', i.e. the little jaws, what I call clutch pencils. You push the button, the jaws open and the lead is free to move it or out. The mechanism just holds the lead, it does not advance it. So many older pencil sets had one mechanism for the 2mm pencil and another for the 0.5mm.
There is now some move to making 2mm pencils with 'push button advance clutch' so both 2mm and 0.5mm use the same mechanism. This is waht the 925 25 and the Rapid Pro do. I don't have a Rotring 600 2mm but it appears to be a traditional push button spring clutch mechanism, i.e. different to that of the 0.5mm Rotring 600.

  11. I hear yah buddy. The best thing I can suggest is that MontBlancs are excellent buying in Lagos. Any street vendor outside your hotel will be able to get you one for $10 or so. Fantastic value.
