Vintage Parker Pencils

Many of my pencils need to get out more. They are far too solitary, spending their time hidden away deep down in some dark cupboard, so recently I bought two cheap plastic display stands and am going to start having my mechanical pencils out more, slowly working my way through the collection.

First out of the cupboard then, five old Parkers. Vintage I suppose, but exactly how old you have to be, to be vintage, is somewhat vague. I guess I'm one of those who thinks 25years for mechanical pencils.

Top to bottom, models
17
Victory
Unknown (now identified as 51 Writefine from aeromatic 1948-57 series)
Classic - in sterling silver Cisele pattern
Jotter

If you happen to know what model "unknown" is, then please do enlighten me.

The tip and visible clutch jaws are the most distinguishing feature.

  1. It appears to be a Parker 51 pencil.

  2. I wonder if the external clutch can work like the secondary clutch found in Staedtler Integrity/Platinum Zero Shin. Does it make it possible to use the lead up to the last 1mm?

  3. Yes I have wondered about that myself. Although this particular pencils mechanism works, it is a little bit... umm . . . chewy and I am a little concerned it is not really up to the rigors of a testing session so have not explored this further.

  4. Yup, Parker 51 'Writefine' pencil with 'Lustraloy' cap and grey jewel. Beauty!

  5. Your reasoning is absolutely understandable, Dave: after all it's a vintage pencil, and it doesn't deserve stressfull and unnecessary tests. Anyway the tip design was innovative!

  6. Hi Kelvin. Yes it is a beauty. The external clutch jaws are a very interesting feature.

  7. There so much more really. I have one from a fairly recent Parker 45 set. Completely different again as all of the above.

You need a way for people to donate to your site/you for the good work being done. Post a PO Box where a check could be sent or something like Patreon on Youtube.

    Thanks

  9. Hi Jim
Well, thanks for the nice comment and thoughts. I wasn't aware of Patreon, but am now :) Anyway, over the years a few readers and retailers have most generously contacted me and gifted me a few pencils, and I am very grateful for that, but I do try to keep this blog focused on the hobby rather than trying to make anything out of it by having Google Ads, standing requests for donations, etc.
Of course if anyone feels like sending cash or pencils my way you can contact me via the sidebar link "About Me" :)
