The screw was half-way threaded and I removed it to see if anything would come out when I removed it, but I couldn't get anything out. Also tried to gently tap it on the table and still nothing would come out. Perhaps you're right about it being broken or jammed. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that with a lot of old screw mechanism pencils the mechanism is broken, it just goes round and round never advancing any lead, so that maybe your problem. They were as well-known for their quality mechancial pencils as they were for fountain pens. If the clip says "SheafferS", the pencil dates to 1964 or before. I just love the act of twisting it to get some more lead out. Doing so also provides a sometimes much needed distraction from the subject of what I am note taking from.
