The cap can get lost if you're not careful and the rubber grip will loosen but it takes 2 years or so. The pencil can wear out and cease working but also after 2-3 years. Had one with the gooey grip, every one has had the barrel split at the top, which then causes the clip to be loose, and eventually the pen falls apart as the split get's to large. I've had the PhD for 4-5 years now and have been extremely pleased with it.
